An Introduction to Foodie Friday – Gourmet Burger Kitchen!

A & C: As most of you probably know, we are great lovers of food. Any kind of food makes us happy – cheese, cakes, donuts, sunday roasts, beetroot, garlic naans, pecan plaits, pickled onions, steak and onion rings, chinese, pizza, pasta – we love all the foods, and to reason the excessive calorie intake, we have decided to start a weekly installment; Foodie Friday! Every Friday, we will share some of our favourite meals, recipes and food with you – whether that’s meals we have had out in amazing restaurants or something we have cooked ourselves at home. So here is our first Foodie Friday – and the only way to introduce our new project is with a burger!

When we visited London a few weeks ago we stumbled across a Gourmet Burger Kitchen, or GBK. We hadn’t ever been to one of these before – we live in the middle of nowhere and the closest one to us is nearly a two hour drive away, but we had heard amazing things and we do love a good burger, so we had nothing to lose. We visited the GBK on Westbourne Grove in London – it was just round the corner from our hotel (perfect for us because we were in a food coma by the time we headed back to the hotel). The restaurant had a really cool retro feel, with swish lighting features and an open kitchen so you could watch the chefs hard at work. The menu choice is also huge, it took us both ages to decide what to have – The Cambeburger, The Taxi Driver, The Kiwi or The Don – and if this wasn’t enough choice, you can even ‘make your own’ from a choice of toppings, bun and burger. Plus they ask you how want your burger cooking, which is such a good option to have – we both decided on medium!

A: I decided to go for the Blue Cheese – a 4oz or 6oz prime beef burger topped with house mayo, relish, salad and a slice of gorgonzola or blue cheese sauce in a toasted sesame seed bun. I went for a 4oz burger (cos I’m a whimp) with a gorgonzola slice and it was £6.45. Looking at the picture, I could eat it all over again. The burger itself was really juicy and having it cooked medium was perfect – it was just pink in the middle and really tasty. The gorgonzola cheese made a really good topping too!

C: I went for the 6 oz (because I’m better at eating than Annie) Cheese & Bacon Burger which included smoked cheddar, BBQ sauce, crispy bacon, house mayo, dill pickle and salad. For £9.20 I think this is one of the best burgers I have ever eaten, and I like to think of myself as quite the burger connoisseur! It was cooked to perfection and was just what I needed after a busy day walking around London.

We both decided to share sides, and chose the sweet potato fries with baconnaise and homemade onion rings with garlic mayo. We LOVE sweet potato chips – they are one of our fave ever things, and to be totally honest you need to visit a GBK even if it’s just for the sweet potato fries. They are super crispy and yummy – the onion rings are just as good too! We also loved the way everything was presented – the enamel mugs and containers go really well with the retro feel.

We were going to be super sophisticated and have cocktails too but we were far too full/had been laughing to much at this sign that someone has obviously changed. Kudos to whoever did it (we are very easily amused), the staff were also very concerned that we would be insulted – they obvs don’t know us very well – and asked us if we would rather move. Very kind and considerate of them. GBK also have a downloadable app, which makes it really easy to find your nearest one (always a winner), and it’s full of challenges and games. We got a free dip for just making our first visit to a GBK! We’ve included a link to their website here, but we will warn you – the photos of their burgers will make you really hungry, if you’re not already after reading this! We will definitely be visiting a GBK again soon, and we can’t wait.

Have you ever been to a GBK? Any other burger recommendations for us? #twolittleowls
